La Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain présente du 3 juillet au 6 novembre 2022 une exposition monographique sur l'artiste aborigène Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori.

L'exposition a pour but de faire découvrir au public cette artiste très connue en Australie. Née vers 1924 sur l'île de Bentinck à Mirdidingki, une petite crique dans le golf de Carpentarie, au nord de l'Australie. Son lieu de naissance lui a donné son nom en référence à son " totem de conception " le dauphin ( juwarna dans la langue natale de Sally, le Kayardilt). Sally Gabori commence à peindre vers l'âge de 80 ans et atteint rapidement une renommée artistique nationale et internationale incitant de nombreuses femmes kaiadilt à se lancer dans la peinture.

L'artiste construit ses toiles autour de six lieux principaux qui l'ont particulièrement marquées au cours de sa vie. Le parcours de l'exposition en dévoile les plus importants tels que Thundi, Didirdibi et Nyinyulki.

La pratique de Sally Gabori s'articule autour de combinaisons de couleurs, de jeux de formes et de superpositions de surfaces.

The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presents from 3 July to 6 November 2022 a monographic exhibition on the Aboriginal artist Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori.

The exhibition aims to introduce the public to this well-known Australian artist.

She was born around 1924 on Bentinck Island in Mirdidingki, a small creek in the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia. Her birthplace gave her name in reference to her 'birth totem' the dolphin ( juwarna in Sally's mother language Kayardilt).

Sally Gabori began painting at the age of 80 years old and soon achieved national and international artistic fame, encouraging many Kaiadilt women to startpainting.

The artist constructs her paintings around six main places that have had a particular impact on her life. The course of the exhibition reveals the most important of these, such as Thundi, Didirdibi and Nyinyulki.

Sally Gabori's practice revolves around combinations of colors, plays on shapes and superposition of surfaces.
