Seul je ne pourrais pas
porter un piano
(d’autant plus
un coffre-fort).
Mais le cœur
ni armoire,
ni piano,
comment le porterais-je, l’ayant repris.
Les banquiers le savent.
« Nous sommes riches sans limites,
quand les poches ne suffisent plus
nous mettons au coffre. »
L’amour
je l’ai caché
en toi
comme des richesses dans du fer
et je m’en vais,
joyeux comme Crésus.
Et peut-être
si j’en ai très envie
je tirerai un sourire
un demi-sourire
ou moins,
bambochant avec d’autres
je dépenserai pour une demi-nuit
une cinquantaine de roubles de monnaie lyrique.

не снесу рояля

не рояль,

сердце снес бы, обратно взяв.
Банкиры знают:
«Богаты без края мы.

кладем в несгораемый».
Любовь
в тебя —
богатством в железо —
запрятал,
хожу
и радуюсь Крезом.
И разве,
если захочется очень,
улыбку возьму,
пол-улыбки
и мельче,
с другими кутя,
протрачу в полночи
рублей пятнадцать лирической мелочи.

Impossible

I can’t do it alone –
carry the grand piano
(and even less,
the safe).
But if I can’t manage the safe
or the grand piano,
then, having retrieved it,
how can I carry my heart.
Bankers know:
‘We’re boundlessly rich.
If we don’t have enough pockets,
we can stuff our safes.’
In you –
I have hidden
my love,
like riches in steel,
and I walk about
exulting, a Croesus.
And,
if desire insist
I can draw out a smile,
a half-smile,
even less,
and, in company revelling,
in half a night expend some fifteen rubles’ worth of lyrical change.
