Vu que je suis à 40min de Philadelphie, et que je passerai un Week-end aux US, j'ai décidé d'aller la visiter pendant mon week-end. On me dit que c'est joli, plein d'histoire, et que je dois essayer le Philly Cheese Steak. On verra :).
In the meantime, I decided to find a guide of Philadelphia. Unfortunately, there is none from my usual favourite editor, Lonely Planet. In the bookstore, there were three different guides. One being small with lots of pictures, but very few explanations, and the other two with more text, and less pictures. I was hesitating between the other two, when I noticed that the price was printed in USD, CAD, and GBP. The prices in GBP were identical. And the first one was more expensive in USD than the second one, but cheaper in CAD! Something is going awfully wrong in the editing world... Granted, the difference was of less than a dollar, but still... Oh well.
Entre temps, j'ai décidé de me dégotter un guide de Philadelphie. Malheureusement, il n'y en a pas de mon éditeur habituel de prédilection, Lonely Planet. Dans la librairie, il y avait trois guides différents. Un petit avec plein d'images, mais très peu d'explications, et les deux autres avec plus de texte, et moins d'images. J'hésitais entre les deux autres, quand je remarquai que le prix était imprimé en Dollars US (USD), Dollars Canadiens (CAD), et Livres Sterling (GBP). Les prix en GBP étaient identiques. Et le premier était plus cher en USD que le second, mais moins cher en CAD! Y'a une couille dans le potage dans le monde de l'édition... D'accord, la différence est de moins d'un dollar, mais quand même... Bah.
So, totally undecisive about those two guides, I walked up to a clerk, who was idling nearby. And I clearly asked him: "I'm going to visit Philadelphia soon, and I am hesitating between those two. Which would your recommend?"
Donc, complètement indécis sur les deux guides, je vais voir un vendeur, qui poireautait pas loin. Et je lui demande clairement: "Je vais visiter Philadelphia bientôt, et j'hésite entre ces deux-là. Vous recommanderiez lequel?"
The clerk looked at the two guides, and then went to the travel guides aisle where I was coming from, looked for the Pennsylvania section, took out the guide I discarded and said: "Y'know, I am more of a picture guy. And this one has lots of pictures in it of the buildings and sights, so you can see what the things look like."
Le vendeur regarde les deux guides, et ensuite se dirige vers la section des guides touristiques d'où je venais, cherche la section Pennsylvanie, sort le guide que j'ai rejeté et dit: "Savez, j'suis plus 'images'. Et celui-là, il y a plein d'images des bâtiments et des choses à voir dedans, donc vous pouvez voir à quoi ça ressemble."
My mind fluttering from amused to dumbfounded, and back, I considered telling the guy, just for a moment, that if I want to know what things look like, I go see them with my eyes, and that it is, in my opinion, the main reason why people travel instead of just watching National Geographic on TV.
Mon esprit papillonnant d'amusé à abasourdi, et vice-versa, j'envisageai de dire au monsieur, l'espace d'un instant, que si je veux savoir à quoi ressemble les choses, je vais les voir avec mes yeux, et que c'est, à mon sens, la principale raison pour laquelle les gens voyagent au lieu de bêtement regarder la chaîne Découvertes à la Téloche.
Instead, polite as a Canadian, hiding all my ruthless French sarcasm and cynism, I uttered a somewhat convincing enough "mmmkaythanksIllthinkaboutit". I ended up taking the one that had "one day" and "two days" itineraries. Hopefully it'll be good enough ;).
Au lieu de ça, poli comme un canadien, cachant mon sarcasme et mon cynisme de malotru français, je marmonne une espèce de "mouaisd'accordmercijevaisyréfléchir" assez convaincant. J'ai fini par prendre celui qui avait des itinéraires "un jour" et "deux jours". J'espère qu'il sera assez bien ;).
