Interview Mirae Campbell

Today we are super excited to share with you our sweet meet with one of the greatest photographer and adventurer of Canada, Mirae Campbell! She gave us some of her precious time to answer to our following questions. It's been really cool to speak with her, hope you'll like it too!

Aujourd'hui, nous sommes heureux de partager avec vous notre dernière rencontre avec l'une des meilleures photographes et aventurières du Canada, Mirae Campbell ! Elle nous a accordé un peu de son temps si précieux pour répondre à nos questions ci-dessous. Cela a été un vrai plaisir de parler avec elle, on espère que ça vous plaira également !

1. Hello Mirae, to begin can you present yourself for those who don't know you? Salut Mirae, pour commencer peux-tu te présenter pour celles et ceux qui ne te connaissent pas ?

I am a lifestyle & adventure photographer and social media coordinator from Whistler, BC (British Columbia). I look for the sparkle in all of my surroundings and try to capture what I see through my photography - I spend the majority of my time on the mountain snowboarding and camping and am never equipped without my camera and a positive attitude.

Je suis une photographe de lifestyle et d'aventure et je suis également coordinatrice sur les réseaux sociaux à Whistler, BC (Colombie Britannique). Je suis constamment à la recherche d'endroits impressionnants autour de moi afin de les capturer et les immortaliser via la photographie. Je passe la plupart de mon temps dans les montagnes à faire du snowboard ou du camping sauvage et je ne pars jamais sans mon appareil photo et une bonne dose de bonne humeur.

2. How your passion for photography started? Comment cette passion pour la photographie a-t-elle commencé ?

I took a film photography class in high school and my dad bought me a DSLR as a graduation present and told me that he thought I could do amazing things with it and continued to encourage me to stick with it even when I was discouraged about the idea of becoming a photographer!

J'ai pris quelques cours de photographie au lycée et mon père m'a acheté un DSLR comme cadeau pour mon diplôme. Il m'a dit qu'il pensait que je pouvais faire d'incroyables choses avec cette appareil et il m'a tout le temps encouragé, poussé pour ne jamais lâcher cet objectif de devenir photographe !

3.What was your first contact with a photo camera? Quel a été ton premier contact avec un appareil photo ?

My grandparents live in Japan and growing up we would go to visit them every year. My grandpa was an extremely successful doctor in the town my mom grew up in so he was always busy with work but his escape was photography - he would get up early every morning and go for a walk by the river and shoot photos of the wildlife by the shore and I have always admired his photography the most. He passed his old film camera onto my brother who didn't take too much interest in it and so it got passed on to me, where, from there I enrolled in my first film photography class. Mes grands-parents vivent au Japon et en grandissant nous allions leur rendre visite tous les ans. Mon grand-père était un docteur très connu dans la ville où ma mère a grandi, donc il était tout le temps très occupé au travail et lorsqu'il avait un peu de temps libre, il s'épanouissait dans la photographie. Chaque matin, il se levait tôt et allait marcher le long de la rivière pour prendre quelques photos de la nature. J'ai toujours admiré ses photographies. Un jour il a donné son appareil photo à mon frère qui ne consacrait que peu d'intérêts à cela donc je l'ai récupéré et depuis je n'ai plus lâché la photographie ! Digital (numeric) - I think in BC, there is a certain culture around film photography and it revolves mainly around the urban and skate scene. I focus heavily on environmental and adventure photography and I feel that I wouldn't be able to be as creative with a film camera. I have a pretty heavy post-processing routine and I like the idea that I can re-design my photo after I take it. I don't have anything against film - I think both types do the job for what the photographer may be looking for, I just learned to love digital and I am more comfortable with it.

Plutôt du numérique. Je pense qu'ici en Colombie Britannique, il y a une certaine culture autour de l'argentique et cela tourne essentiellement autour de la vie urbaine et de la scène skate. Pour ma part, je me concentre essentiellement sur la photographie d'aventure et de nature et j'ai l'impression que je ne serai pas aussi créative avec un appareil photo argentique. J'ai une routine assez huilée dans le traitement de mes photos et j'aime l'idée que je puisse retravailler une photo après l'avoir prise. Je n'ai rien contre l'argentique, je pense que les deux techniques font de très belles photos, j'ai simplement appris avec du numérique et c'est ce avec quoi je me sens le plus à l'aise.

Something with clean composition and good colour distribution. I'm drawn to vibrant colours and I'm immediately attracted to work that is tastefully colourful - ex: Chris Burkard or Frode Sandbech

Une photo avec une composition très propre et de très belles couleurs. Je suis attirée par les couleurs vives et j'aime le travail fait avec goût. Un peu à la façon de Chris Burkard ou Frode Sandbech

Not sure - I'm not sure if I'm looking for anything really. The outdoors keep me grounded and happy. It's my safe haven when things go wrong and nature has a way of fixing all my problems. It reminds me that the world doesn't revolve around me and everything is going to be okay.

Je ne suis pas certaine de rechercher quelque chose en particulier. La nature me permet de garder les pieds sur terre et d'être heureuse. C'est mon refuge quand les choses vont mal et la nature m'aide à résoudre tous mes problèmes. Cela me ramène souvent à la réalité, que les choses ne tournent pas autour de moi et que tout va rentrer dans l'ordre.

Haha I think this is a sensitive subject for many people. I think that everyone has a talent, and Instagram (or any social platform) is just a media where people can express it. Instagram can make anyone into a photographer and it's just like any kind of art, people are entitled to their own opinions on how people perceive themselves, that's why it's our choice whether we want to follow or not follow someone. We can choose who we want to be influenced and inspired by and we each have varying definitions of what that looks like.

Haha je pense que c'est un sujet sensible pour beaucoup de personnes. Je pense que tout le monde a du talent, et instagram (ou tout autre plateforme) est juste un moyen via lequel les gens s'expriment. Instagram peut rendre n'importe qui photographe et c'est juste une autre forme d'art. Chacun a sa manière de percevoir les choses et d'apprécier ou d'être inspiré par quelqu'un d'autre et c'est ce fameux principe de je follow ou je ne follow pas qui nous laisse cette liberté d'expression intact. On peut choisir par qui l'on souhaite être inspiré et influencé et chacun se fait sa propre opinion sur l'impact que cela a.

Super keen to check out New Zealand. Snowboarding in Japan is also at the top of my list - hopefully next winter!!

Je suis très curieuse de découvrir la Nouvelle Zélande. Et partir rider au Japon est aussi au sommet de ma liste! J'espère le faire l'hiver prochain!

I sort of take it month by month haha I'm always on the go with a few projects but lots of travelling in the near future for sure!!

En réalité, je prends les choses mois après mois haha j'ai toujours quelques projets en cours. Mais certainement beaucoup de voyage dans l'avenir, c'est certain!
