La chose qui manque le plus à Manhattan, c'est Brooklyn. Dit comme ça, ça paraît vide de sens mais les locaux et habitués de la ville comprendront mon ressenti. Manhattan, c'est beau, grand, beaucoup de monde mais aussi souvent trop sérieux, et parfois un peu trop snob. Le Gotham West Market, c'est un peu Brooklyn qui s'invite à Manhattan avec une attitude cool et amicale. Ce Brooklyn où la coolitude est mère, on le retrouve dans ce food hall dans le quartier du Hell's Kitchen. Un food hall, késako? Plusieurs restaurants se partagent l'espace et les clients se restaurent au milieu. En résumé, pas besoin de se fixer sur un type de cuisine, chacun prend se qu'il veut et se retrouve au milieu. Souvent, on partage la table avec de parfaits inconnus et s'enchaînent des discussions enflammées sur la vie à Manhattan et autres sujets préférés des New Yorkais.
Bref, le Gotham West Market, on y vient, on y boit et mange et surtout, on profite de l'atmosphère tranquille qui y reigne. Je l'ai découvert cet hiver et à chaque fois je n'ai jamais d'appareil photo (désolé pour la qualité iPhone). Un endroit parfait (car proche du bureau) pour se retrouver entre amis; mes préférés sont El Colmado, où j'adore m'installer au bar pour admirer la préparation de leurs plats espagnols; le Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop avec leurs nouilles en soupe succulentes (quoi q'un peu trop salées à mon goût parfois). Une petite visite dans le magasin Brooklyn Kitchen, où j'avoue ne jamais rien acheter mais où j'espionne avec envie les classes en cours (dont celle de la recette de la célèbre pizza de chez Roberta).
Le Gotham West Market est une adresse à garder quand on veut s'expatrier à Brooklyn le temps d'un repas sans pour autant quitter Manhattan. Un food hall insolite et très sympathique qui ravira toute la famille. Alors ça vous tente? Vous avez testé?

The most obvious thing missing in Manhattan is Brooklyn. That doesn't make any sense you might say; but New Yorkers can understand my statement. Manhattan, is great and majestic with tons of people, but it is also very business-like, and sometimes a little bit too snobbish. The Gotham West Market is like Brooklyn inviting itself to Manhattan, bringing that relaxing and cool vibe, and combining it with good cuisine. This unique food hall is located in Hell's Kitchen, which make it the perfect spot to meet with friends.
At Gotham West Market, you eat, you drink but mostly you relax and enjoy the moment. I discovered this spot last winter and went back as it is so conveniently close to my office (you will have to excuse the quality of the pictures. They are from my iPhone). Among my favorites is El Colmado, a Spanish tapas bar where I like to sit at the counter to admire how they prepare the plates. Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop is famously known for its noodle soups (a bit too salty for me sometimes though). The Brooklyn Kitchen is a nice store, but I have to admit I never bought anything there and only go to spy on one of their genius cooking classes. If you want to learn how to make a pizza like Roberta's, this is the place.
The Gotham West Market is the perfect spot to keep in mind when you miss that laid-back atmosphere from Brooklyn but don't want to be stuck on the train for an hour. It's a great place to be with friends or to make friends (oh Hello Stranger sharing my table. I see you like Brooklyn too.). Have you tried it yet? What is your favorite food there?
