RENCONTRE AVEC … HILLA SHAMIA

So I’d like to write a little article about your story as a designer.
How did you get there ?

HS.In order to answer this I can tell you a bit about what sparked my interest in natural materials as a child. I grew up in a village surrounded by nature. I spent many hours in the field, playing around with natural materials and substances. Only in recent years, I discovered how deeply affected I was by these materials. I kept finding myself, returning again and again to this place, these natural substances, where I found much familiarity and inspiration.

Pour répondre à cela je peux te raconter un petit bout de ce qui a éveillé mon intérêt pour les matériaux naturels quand j’étais enfant. J’ai grandi dans un village au milieu de la nature. J’ai passé des heures dans les champs à jouer avec des matières et des substances naturelles. Il n’y a que quelques années que j’ai découvert combien ces mutations m’avaient profondément marquée. Je me suis retrouvée à retourner continuellement vers cela, vers ces substances naturelles où je trouvais beaucoup de familiarité et d’inspiration.

Where did you study ?

HS.I completed my first degree in the field of industrial design at the Holon Institute of Technology in Israel (HIT). However, a major part of my development as a designer occurred on a daily basis in the studying of my surroundings. I believe that inspiration can be found at every step in our life and that there is so much to learn in the mundane.

J’ai fait mes études dans le secteur du design industriel au Holon Institute of Technology (HIT) en Israël. Cependant une majeure partie de ma construction en tant que designer s’est fait au quotidien dans l’étude de mon environnement. Je crois que l’inspiration peut être trouvée à chaque étape de notre vie et qu’il y a tellement à apprendre dans la banalité.

What are the « subjects », the lines of your work ?

HS.I can’t say that I set out to design with one specific subject in my mind. What captures my attention and inspiration and eventually directs my work is the encounter with the actual material: the natural processes, the texture, the history, the semantics of the material. The process which follows includes refining all this into an essence, an idea that I can work with; An idea which will express precisely the connection between the material and the product.

Je ne peux pas dire que je me mette à travailler avec un sujet spécifique en tête. Ce qui retient mon attention et m’inspire et qui peut donner une direction à mon travail, c’est la rencontre avec le matériau lui-même : les processus naturels, la texture, l’histoire, la sémantique du matériau. Le processus qui suit consiste à épurer tout cela dans une essence, une idée avec lesquelles je peux travailler. Une idée qui exprimera avec précision le lien entre le matériau et le produit.

Are you working with other people ?

HS.At the moment I have plans for several collaborations with other designers and professionals. I truly believe in working together. In the past I participated in a project called « 72 Hours Urban Action », in which a group of designers set out to design something within 72 hours together. I see this as an amazing opportunity to create in a stimulating and dynamic environment.

En ce moment, j’ai en projet plusieurs collaborations avec d’autres designers et professionnels. Je crois réellement au travail ensemble. Pas le passé, j’ai participé à un projet appelé « 72 hours Urban Action » dans lequel un groupe de designers se mettait à créer ensemble le design de quelque chose en 72h. Je vois cela comme une incroyable opportunité de créer dans un environnement dynamique et stimulant.

Do you create your objects yourself ?

HS.I begin working on a prototype on my own in my studio.It is absolutely necessary for me to work on my own at this delicate stage, in order to allow a deep study of the material and technology. It is the findings, through trail and error, of this stage that formulate the rest of the process. When this stage is completed I turn to wide range of professionals for consultancy and assistance in their field of expertise.

Je commence à travailler sur un prototype toute seule dans mon studio. A ce moment délicat, il m’est absolument nécessaire de travailler seule pour me permettre une étude approfondie du matériau et de la technologie. A cette étape, ce que je découvre au travers d’essais et d’erreurs, va déterminer le reste du processus. Quand cette étape est terminée, je me tourne vers une large gamme de professionnels du consulting et de l’assistance dans leur domaine d’expertise.

How do you see the future for you in design and generally in the world ? Have you got some plans ?

HS.In general I cant say that I would love to work together with big companies. I am extremely happy and grateful to have had this kind of opportunity so far. I would like to able to produce and distribute my own products, created in my studio.
I really wish to design and create a variation on products which will encourage people to pause and observe and really feel.

De façon générale, je ne peux pas dire que j’adorerais travailler avec de grosses entreprises, je suis extrêmement heureuse et reconnaissante d’avoir eu ce type d’opportunité jusqu’à présent. J’aimerais pouvoir produire et distribuer mes propres produits, créer mon studio. J’espère vraiment designer et créer une série de produits qui inciterait les gens à s’arrêter, observer et réellement ressentir.

Rocking Horse

« … this one is definitely a piece that speaks for itself. As the image shows, the natural properties of the round log inspire the creation of a moving piece. The simplicity of this raw form translates itself into a crude yet familiarly playful rocking horse. »

Rocking horse est ma pièce préférée car elle met en évidence la matière : l’objet est crée par la matière. On prend le temps de s’arrêter et de savourer l’évidence de cette création (… et on saute dessus pour la tester !).

Casting Wood est la série qui a « lancé » Hilla Shamia. De même que Rocking Horse, ici le métal exprime la nature même d’un bois brûlé. La simplicité exprime toute l’essence et toutes les propriétés du bois et du métal ;  deux matériaux se rencontrent pour former une nouvelle matière, fascinante.
