L'histoire du roman 

Ismaël, le vague à l'âme, désargenté ne sait quoi faire de sa carcasse. Plus rien ne le retient à terre. Il songe alors à partir à l'aventure en embarquant à bord d'un baleinier. Attiré par la mer et le large, Ismaël fait la connaissance de Queequeg, un prince polynésien oublié, cannibale harponneur natif de Rokovoko, une île très lointaine dans l’ouest et dans le sud et qui ne figure sur aucune carte. Après quelques péripéties, les deux compères apprivoisés prennent place à bord du Péquod, un baleinier dont le capitaine tyrannique répond au nom d'Achab. Ce dernier sait ce qu'il veut. Il ne traque pas le cachalot pour sa précieuse huile qui n'a pas d'équivalent pour l'éclairage ou la lubrification des machines mais Moby Dick, un gigantesque cachalot blanc auréolé d'une redoutable réputation. Et pour cause, il lui a par le passé arraché une jambe. Du coup, le cruel capitaine s'est juré de sillonner les mers du globe et mettre à mort de ses propres mains Moby Dick. Dès le départ, le capitaine gagne un respect sans faille de la part de son équipage issu de tous les continents et de toutes les classes sociales et qui le suit fasciné par son courage et sa détermination. Brusque, appuyé sur sa jambe d'ivoire, il fait de cette expédition le but de sa vie, son trophée ultime qui fera rayonner son nom par-delà les océans. Mais son orgueil le mène à sa perte et au naufrage de son bateau et de son équipage. Ismaël est miraculeusement recueilli par le Rachel, sauvé par le cercueil fabriqué par Queequeg.

Le début du roman

"Call me Ishmael. Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me. There now is your insular city of the Manhattoes, belted round by wharves as Indian isles by coral reefs— commerce surrounds it with her surf. Right and left, the streets take you waterward. Its extreme downtown is the battery, where that noble mole is washed by waves, and cooled by breezes, which a few hours previous were out of sight of land. Look at the crowds of water-gazers there. Circumambulate the city of a dreamy Sabbath afternoon."
