We were lucky enough to get tickets for Jack White's (former member of the White Stripes) concert before his album comes out. So we headed out to Tennessee along with Hubby's best friend on a sunny day.
We started with a late lunch at Lupo's Pizza. Nice atmosphere and a good pizza without spending a fortune. Then we decided to get a feel of the city since we had a few hours to spare before the concert. One of the town's attraction is the Walnut Street Bridge, entirely pedestrian, it connects downtown to the North shore. We were actually parked on the North shore and therefore had the pleasure to cross the park and then the 1890 bridge.
Chattanooga city center is located around Market Street. I was surprised to see a large number of chain restaurants there. Living in Asheville we're pretty used not to see them. I was however attracted by the architecture of the Tennessee Aquarium. We were told it's a neat aquarium, but it was far too nice of a day to get stuck inside.
Truth is, I almost gave in to some Ben&Jerry's ice cream. But once in the shop the sugar smell was a little overwhelming. Not to mention that I couldn't find a flavor I absolutely wanted to try.
We walked around the arts district where we came across several museums and even more sculptures of all kinds.
The neighborhood offered some beautiful antebellum houses.
However we did have a good laugh when we went by the courthouse and found the local version of Occupy Wall Street aka Occupy Chattanooga. It felt more like a Hippie campground than a protest movement. Not to mention that a courthouse has little to do with corporate influence. We had them in Asheville too mind you, but they've been gone for a few weeks now. They had set camp in we front of the Federal building housing the NOAA weather research center.
Around spring was in the air.
An other odd site in town was this church tower, which we could see from far away. Oddly enough as we got closer, we still couldn't see the church. Had it burned down?
Nope, it had been turned into a parking lot, or as Hubby nicknamed it: the Holy Parking Lot.
In any case we had a pleasant afternoon in town. Next time, I think we might also go to Lookout Mountain on the edge of the city. It was the site of an important battle of the civil war and now hosts several touristic sites. As far as the concert, it was great, but the ride back home... well that's another story.
