During our stop in Juneau, we took the morning to go see Mendenhall glacier. It's pretty easy to get there, all you need to do is stop at the clusted of booth on the docks, they pretty much all offer a round trip ticket for $16 per person. I think they all offer similar things. The bus is every 30 minutes, we waited a few minutes under the rain before we saw our white school bus coming to pick us up.
J'ai aussi souris en voyant le signe qui disait: "Si vous voyez un ours, ne vous approchez pas et ne vous enfuyez pas en courant". Heu ben on fait quoi alors? Vous verrez pas la suite que ca nous a servit.
The driver was a decendent of the first people. She told us all sort of stories during the trip. I think I would have a hard time separating truth from fiction, but in any case it was highly entertaining. According to her the people of Alaska have three hobbies to survive winter: drinking, druging and/or breeding... she let us guess what hers was.
I also smiled when I saw the sign that says: "Should you encounted a bear, do not approach the bear or run away." Sure but what do we do then? You will see that this came to its use.
Les photos ne traduisent pas la beauté de ce glacier aux tons de bleu. C'est grandiose, surprenant, le pouvoir de la nature est impressionant. J'ai vu quelques glaciers en France et en Norvège aussi, mais jamais comme ça.
The pictures don't give justice to this blue-shaded glacier. It's magnificant, surprising, the power of nature is impressive. I've seen glaciers in France and Norway, but nothing like that.
The temperature by the glacier were much cooler than Junean, or even the nearby trails. The fleece and rain jacket were quite useful.
There is a small information booth where a map can be picker up, an also a welcome center with an entrance fee as it's a center of interprtation for the glacier. From the parking lot it's easy to get to the peninsula you can see below which offers a great view over the glacier.
It's really impressive to see the amount of water escaping from under the glacier.
A droite du glacier, on peut voir Nugget Falls.
To the right of the glacier there is Nugget Falls.
The water flow was impressive, even from far away. Normally there is a way to get close to the waterfall, but because of flooding, the trail was inacessible and we had to do with seeing it from farther away.
J'était trés impressionnée par les tons de bleu des icerbergs.
I was quite impressed by the blue shades of the icebergs.
It's really worth the visit, the glacier is easily accessible without having to walk on it. I'm sure it's amazing for pictures on a sunny day. We also enjoyed the trails which are worth the extra time.
