For a change last weekend was very sunny, even warm in Denmark. This of course is the right time to go to the seashore and when you live on an island you have plenty of choice regarding which beach! Head in the direction of Amager Strand to discover an island created between 2004 and 2005. The whole island is actually a large jetty lined with sand dunes and cycling paths, 2 km long. There is in fact 4 km of beach. The connection to the land is made by 3 bridges, and that is it…. except for a few ice creams and a small range of drinks there is nothing to be found on the island. If you plan to stay all day, you would do well to take your picnic basket with you.
The surprise comes from the cultural point of view. The water turns a little chilly for bathing and sunbathing is less than occasionally enjoyable in the country. Crossing the first bridge, you will find a library open on weekdays every sunny day! one can read on the poster sticked on the metalic container. The opening period (June 27th to August 12th) matches the Danish summer vacation (yes, going back to school on a Friday seems normal to everybody) and being closed during the weekends doesn’t surprise anyone in Denmark. The opposite certainly would.
For the duration of a fortnight you can listen to a free concert as the beach has also become the ideal exhibition place for musical instruments played by the wind: bells, sticks, strings, and bamboo.
