The first time I brought this home, my sister-in-law was visiting. I had found the vegetable at the market without being quite sure of what it was. As I usually get my produce at the market I like to try things that are in season or that I'm not familiar with. I asked the farmer what it was and was told "Kholrabi". Once home my sister-in-law saw the vegetable that came from space and shouted "Red Neck Ice Cream!!!" with the smile of a five years old.It so happens that when she was a kid a neighbor grew them and told her they were red neck ice cream since you can hold it upside down by the stalk and eat it in an ice cream fashion. The plant has a taste somwhere between cabbage and broccoli stak. It can be eaten raw or sauteeds. So far I've made a spicy chinese slaw (sadly a little too spicy, I think a few pinches of red pepper flakes are plenty enough) and a kholrabi pudding.
