After Toulouse it was time to show Hubby the main core of the family. For the we headed to the Gers where my maternal Grand-Parents live. We left a cloudy Toulouse, but the closer we got to the Gers the sunnier it got, it was a good sign.
One of my cousin's Sev, we to pick us up at the train station... well once she could get rid of her students. So we decided to enjoy a French café and tried the one across from the train station. It was approved by my favorite American. It was nice to sit in the sun, time went by faster.
Then my older cousin arrived, what a joy to see her after so many years. With her as our guide we strolled around the town to get Hubby a glimpsy of this city of Gascony,
We visited St Marie's Cathedral, walked around the tortuous streets, went to the monumental staircase at the feet of the Armagnac Tower. To us this is our history since one of our great-great-great-something-uncle was emprisonned there during the French Revolution before getting beheaded. It's still a pretty building. Then we went down the giant staircase (sadly under renovation), it's where d'Artagnan's statue (the famous Mousquetaire) is at. Famous character of the South-West that most Americans think is fictional. Nay my friends, we are proud of him in our region.
The we did a little shopping after discovering the cute shop Treinta Y Dos or TYD for the ones in the know. It's similar to the brand 64 used in the Hautes-Pyrenees, but in this case it's for the Gers and it's assigned number of 32 (Treinta y dos in occitan). Go check their website, it's neat. I couldn't resist a T-shirt but I also totally melted for their packaging (those are duck confit glass containers).
Note: Je suis la première a ramener un mari chez les grands-parents...
After this pleasant time (during which we came across an other cousin) we went to the castle, that is my grandparents's house which is called Le Castet. There again, the joy of getting back together, introductions of the American husband. And for his the tour of the big house. I feel quite special (my cousins said chouchou which would be like the "grandparent's pet") when we were told we would sleep in the Pink Bedroom, the room has a queen bed in which I probably only slept when I still wore diapers since it's an adult only bedroom. It was odd not to sleep in any of the children's assigned room. But then again a twin bed wouldn't quite have cut it either.
As a note you should know I'm the first one of the grand-children to bring a husband to my grandparents.
We also had a lot of fun climbing on the gate, the small town is a castelnau (walled city) and admire the countryside. I would have almost jumper in the pool but we lacked time, and the water was on the chilly side.
We were invited by older cousin and her other half for dinner, upon their recommendation we stopped in Bazian. A beautiful village, although the grandma said "Bah, Bazian, there isn't much to see, it's like St A." Hum, well grandma, you were wrong it's a beautiful village. Half-timbered houses, beautiful towers, a true castle (in ruin but still).
Soirée souvenir, découverte (on a eu droit a la visite guidée de la maison retapée par Sami), moment de cousins qui ne peuvent que se vivre, et le tout accompagne d'un repas fabuleux. Il n'y a pas a dire c'est bon la famille.
After that we met with my aunt and uncle whom where visiting especially from Bordeaux, along with my cousins and our grandparents for a toast. After that we kicked out the older generations! A meal just among cousins. It was nice, and Sev's other half: Sami has a Tunisian mom, she came just to make a fish couscous (since Hubby is vegetarian). You should have seen the adult's faces... they would have loved to stay and eat with us. But they also understood how much we yearned to hang out together and nicely went back to my grandparents.
It was an evening full of shared memories, discoveries (we toures the beautiful house Sami has been working on), cousin moments that can only been experienced with family, and all with an amazing dinner. Family is good.
