We had family in town this week-end, so we took them for a stroll at Chimney Rock State Park in the Hickory Nut gorge. Sadly only one of the trails was open, but at least it's the one to the bottom of the waterfall, 1.5m round trip and pretty flat, even my brother in law could do this. The trail follows the rock facade and it's well worth looking up from time to time.
Hickory Nut Falls.
Here is where the Last of the Mohicans's ending was filmed, if my memory is right the last fighting scene took place above the waterfall. We went there years ago when the upper trail was still open, before the private park was purchased by the State of North Carolina. I hope they will reopen those trails one day because it was a beautiful hike.
What always amuses me in that park is to see people planning to do a hike in flip-flops, or those who can't read signs. We saw this young lady do this twice just to have her picture taken.
My personal joy at the end of the hike: the first blooming trilliums. If daffodils are poking their nose in our yard, to me trilliums being wild and native flowers, they are quite symbolic of the arrival of spring in our region.
