Siqui Sánchez, l’auteur de ces 39 œuvres photographiques, réalisées entres les années 2000 et 2008, explique: “Il y a longtemps, on m’a proposé d’illustrer un livre sur les paysages mexicains de Roberto Bolaño : le nord du Mexique, la frontière, le désert de Sonora et Mexico DF. Le titre Le voyage impossible renvoie à la difficulté de situer les lieux où se déroulent les romans dans un mélange confus de réalité et de fiction. Quoiqu’il en soit, la priorité n’était pas tant de situer le lieu exact d’une scène ou d’une autre, que de croiser un lieu imaginé par l’auteur avec la réalité, pour pouvoir suggérer les sensations que produit la lecture de ses livres”.

“Le paysage du Mexique est fondamental dans l’oeuvre de Roberto Bolaño […] Pour l’écrivain, le paysage est un élément émotionnel supplémentaire qui est lié de façon indissociable aux aventures des protagonistes. Avec ce travail j’ai essayé de rester fidèle aux émotions suscitées par la lecture de Los detectives salvajes ou 2666, plutôt qu’aux lieux eux-mêmes. La photographie est le reflet du monde visible, certes, mais elle tente aussi de relever le défi de représenter l’intangible : les sensations, les recherches, les absences.” Siqui Sánchez.
