Ever since I have worked as a ceramist, I have been fascinated by the neriage technique. This highly demanding technique offers an infinite variety of possibilities. It is more than a fascination, it has become my passion. When I am looking for new patterns, relentlessly striving for perfection, I am guided by emotion.
So many components like form, pattern and colour need to be balanced in order to produce a harmonious effect. Nature is my teacher and an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Everywhere I come upon form and structure. In addition, my creative abilities are stimulated by architecture.
The neriage technique enables me to express my feelings through my own individual style. It allows me to break new grounds in the field of ceramics, to explore the very limits of coloured porcelain.
In this technique porcelain bodies of different colours are rolled out into slabs, joined together with slip, cut into strips and then reassembled before they are finally fired. This old technique is very complex in its expressive force. I strictly concentrate on basic elements, reducing them to clear patterns and contemporary forms. In neriage ceramics there is no brushwork. The upper and lower surfaces of a piece are thus the same. I work exclusively with the finest porcelain. So firing is a delicate and exciting process that needs careful attention.
The neriage technique leads me to new ways of interpreting an ancient technique. I see the combination of traditional handicraft with contemporary design as a great personal challenge. To me it is much more than work: it is my mission in life.
