Valentine's Day on the Slopes
Il n'y a que deux hiver où je n'ai pas skié depuis que je sais tenir sur des skis: 2000/2001 quand j'ai passé l'année chez mon parrain et l'an dernier. Autant vous dire que les spatules me demangaient beaucoup. Heureusement des collegues d'Hubby nous ont offert de les rejoindre pour un week-end au ski. Hubby m'a dit "Ca te va comme cadeau de la St Valentin à tous les deux". Tu veux rire? On ne peut pas faire mieux!

Nous étions a la station de Beech Mountain, a deux heures au nord d'ici. Si les sommets manquaient de neige, la couche a été bien entretenu sur la station.
Nous avions une location au pied des pistes, le plus dur étant de descendre et monter les escalier en chaussures de ski.

There has only been two winters when I didn't ski since I've known how to: 2000/2001 when I spent a year at my godparents and last year. It would be an understatement to only say that I wanted to go. Thankfully some of Hubby's colleagues offered us to join them for a ski week-end. Hubby asked me: "Do you feel it's a good Valentine's Day present to one an other?" You're kidding? You can't do any better than that!

We went to the resort of Beech Mountain, two hours north of here. If the summits weren't covered in snow, at least the snow layer had been well maintained on the slopes.
We had a rental right at the bottom of the slopes, the hardest thing being to go up and down the stairs with ski boots on. La location, trois chambres, un loft, une cusine et une belle vue sur les montagnes.
The rental, three bedrooms, a loft, a kitchen and a beautiful view over the mountains. Il y a 9 pistes plus une piste débutants, les etaient toutes ouvertes. Sur les 5 telesieges seul 3 fonctionnaient. Comme dans les autres stations que j'ai vu dans le secteur, pas de téléski. Enfin il y a un "J-Bar" pour la piste débutant où l'on attrape une barre. Il y avait un débrayable (une premiere pour moi ici), pas aussi rapide ni récent que ce que je connais dans les Pyrénées et la barrière ne comprennais pas de repose pieds, mais au moins c'était plus rapide.

There are 9 slopes plus a beginners slope, all were open. Out of the 5 chair lifts only 3 were functionning. As in other resorts I've seen here, no actual ski lift were people are standing up. Well they had what they called a "J-bar" for the beginners where they hold on to the lift with their hands. There was also a two speed chair lift (first time I see one around here), not as fast or updated as the ones I know in the Pyrenees and the safety barrier had no feet rest, but at least it was much faster. Le premier jour nous avons pris un forfait Twilight: après-midi et soir. Les pistes étaient en bonne conditions. Nous avons fait une pause casse-croute vers 18h avant d'aller skier à la lumière des lampadaires. C'est le genre de chose que certaines stations devrait déveloper dans les Pyrénées.

The first day we did a Twilight ticker: afternoon and evening. The slopes were in good conditions. We did a snack break around 6pm and then went back to ski with the "street" lights. The kind of thing that should be developed more in the Pyrenees. Le lendemain nous avions un forfait journée. Je pense que j'ai passé 90% de la matinée sur la piste White Lightning. C'est bien simple, c'est la première fois que je trouvais des conditions de neige similaires à mes montagnes natives. Dammé bien comme il faut, une belle pente, j'enchainais la godille a toute vitesse, grisée par le vent sur mon visage et le bruit des spatules sur la neige. Hubby avait un peu du mal a me suivre, mais ce n'est pas grave je l'attendais au télésiège, car rien de tel que de se blotir l'un contre l'autre sur le télésiège un jour de St Valentin.

The next day we did a day pass. I think I spent 90% of the morning on the White Lightning slope. It's plain and simple. it's the first time that I found snow conditions similar to my native mountains. Groomed just like it should be, beautiful slope, I was going fast, curve after curve, thrilled by the wind on my face, the sound of the skis slicing through the snow. Hubby had a bit of a hard time keepin up, but that's all right, I would wait for him by the ski lift, because after all there is nothing better than snuggling against each other on a ski lift on Valentine's Day. L'aprés-midi il a fait chaud et la neige c'est vite transformée en neige de printemps, mais qu'importe. La sation a un certain charme, inspiré je pense des Alpes Autrichiennes ou Allemandes, je ne saurais dire.

That afternoon it was warm and the snow quickly turned into slush, but who cares. The resort is quite charming, a bit inspired by the Austrian or German Alps I would think, I'm not sure. L'un des interet du ski c'est aussi de voir les petits malins sur les pistes. Ces deux la j'aurais bien voulu les voir tomber (ben quoi? je suis méchane je sais).

The other interest of skiing is to see the smarty pants on the slopes. I wish I could have seen those two guys fall (so what if I'm mean?). Il ne manquait plus que les cowyboys.

Only the cowboys were missing.

Beech Meadows, à gauche aprés la mairie de la station propose location et forfaits à prix réduits, le matériel était de bonne qualité.
