Before his coming to Paris @ Queen on January 29th, we had an exclusive interview with Nic Fanciulli. And we have also free entrance for you to win here. From being a shy, talented DJ plying his trade as resident at his local club, to becoming a global superstar, the rise and rise of Nic Fanciulli has been well documented. He has graced countless covers of the most respected dance publications whilst his name repeatedly pops up when clubbers discuss the finest DJ talent in recent years. So today, we have the chance to offer you an exclusive interview with him. It follows notably the interviews of other English DJs like D. Ramirez, Michael Woods and James Talk more recently. First of all, I would like to thank Nic who answered our questions. Have a good reading.
Hello Nic,
2010 is over. What will you remember of 2010? What are the 2 or 3 things people need to know?
> 2010 was a great year for myself and Saved, my highlights were; being resident at Carl Cox's Revolution Continues parties at Space, Ibiza. The summer of Saved events in Maidstone with DJ's such as Loco Dice, Dubfire, Carl Cox and John Digweed. And the release of Mark Broom's Acid House album on Saved, it was his first album for almost 15 years and I was really proud it came out on Saved.
What will be your next release?
> My next release it a collaboration with Gary Beck, it's called 'Hear Me Out' and is out on Saved on 31st Jan.
For 2011, what we expect from you? New tracks? An album maybe? A compilation?
> I've got a few tracks ready for release early this year, the collab I mentioned above with Gary Beck, and Caller I.D will be released on Saved with a Radio Slave remix as part of the Saved 2011 Compilation. I don't have any plans for an artist album at the moment but I may do a compilation later in the year.
After we gave this little introduction about your music news to our readers, we wanted to get back to your origins. Indeed, could you please tell us in a few words, how did you become a DJ and producer?
> It all started for me when I began handing mix tapes to a local club promoter from ClubClass, he then made me a weekly resident and through this I got to DJ with guests such as Deep Dish, John Digweed, Danny Howells, X-Press 2, and Pete Tong on a weekly basis. It was a great learning curve for me. I got to meet loads of great people and it formed an excellent platform for me to showcase what I do. The exposure I got from playing these gigs led to bigger gigs at Cream and for [BBC] Radio 1. I worked hard both touring and producing and things grew from there.
You began your career as being a DJ notably with you ClubClass residency. Then you become progressively to produce some tracks. Do you prefer to be considered as a DJ or producer? What do you prefer: play in a club or produce a track?
> I don't think you can either really be one or other anymore, those days have passed. To make it now as a DJ you need to produce as well.
I think if you ask any DJ they will tell you playing in a club is the most fun, there's an amazing atmosphere and it's great to interact with the clubbers. But also sometimes it's nice to chill out and work on a track, when you get something sounding massive it can be just as satisfying.
At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved along the years?
> I have been very lucky from day one my family have been really supportive, they never questioned my choice of profession. They are extremely proud of what I have achieved and I couldn't have done it without their support.
You worked also under the project Skylark with a famous track “That’s more like it” notably remixed by Jerry Ropero and the Buick project with your fantastic remix of Timo Maas feat Bryan Molko “First day”, that I really like. I wasn’t aware that you were behind these projects. Are these pseudo dead?
> For the moment Andy Chatterley and I are busy working on our own things and touring so there's just no time, and I am concentrating on the label but perhaps one day we will work together again.
Nic, another string of your bow comes in the form of Saved Records that you launched in October 2004. Widely regarded as one of the leading cutting edge labels on the scene, it released compositions from both established producers such as Zoo Brazil and Paolo Mojo, to up and coming talent such as James Talk (that we interviewed some days ago) and Shafunkers. What is your role in this imprint and how did you managed this role and the one you have as being producer and DJ?
> I used to run the label alone but with my production work and touring it got a bit too much, so my Brother Mark came to work with me, we jointly manage the label now and Mark takes care of the day-to-day management of the label. He's doing a brilliant job and Saved is running much more smoothly.
As you come from the U.K., are there one or two English artists you would like to introduce us today?
> I would recommend checking out two guys from the label Gary Beck and Jordan Peak.
Moreover Nic, what did you know about the French electronic music scene? Are there some artists that you personally know? You particularly love their works? Indeed, you will come to Paris on January 29th for a mix @ Queen.
> I am really looking forward to coming to play in Paris, it's not somewhere I play very often so that makes it special. I really love the work of Clio at the moment, he has a few tracks signed to Saved and is a super talented producer. I am also a big fan of Paul Rich and his label Quartz Rec.
Besides music, what are your hobbies?
> Hanging out with my friends and family, I spend a lot of time away from home so when I am home I like to chill with them.

> Make sure you check out the Saved 2011 Sampler out on the 14th February, it's got some massive tracks on it from myself, Gary Beck, Jordan Peak, Clio, Danny Serrano, Andrea Oliva, Philip Bader, Benny Rodrigues, DJ Kool Dek, Onno and Alex Piccini & Olderic.

2010 est terminé. Que retiendras-tu de cette année écoulée? Quels sont les 2 ou 3 choses que les gens ont besoin de savoir?
> 2010 a été une grande année pour moi et mon label Saved. Ce que je retiendrais : ma résidence aux soirées de Carl Cox « Revolution Continues » au Space d’Ibiza. L'été des événements Saved à Maidstone avec DJs comme Loco Dice, Dubfire, Carl Cox et John Digweed. Il y a eu enfin la sortie de l’album d’acid-house de Mark Broom sur Saved, nouvel album après 15 ans de silence. Je suis vraiment fier que ce soit sorti sur le label que j’ai fondé.
Quelle est ta prochaine sortie?
> Ma prochaine sortie est une collaboration avec Gary Beck et s’appelle «Hear Me Out». Elle sort le 31 Janvier sur Saved Records.
Qu’est ce qu’on peut attendre de ta part pour 2011? De nouveaux tracks? Un album peut-être? Une compilation?
> J'ai quelques tracks prêts à être diffusés en début d’année, la collab que j’ai mentionné ci-dessus avec Gary Beck, puis « Caller I.D » qui sortira sur Saved avec un remix de Radio Slave. Ce titre fera parti de la compilation Saved 2011. Rien n’est prévu du côté d’un album solo pour le moment en tout cas, mais je devrais bosser sur une compilation d’ici la fin de l’année.
Après nous avoir donné des news sur ta musique, nous aurions voulu en revenir à tes origines. En effet, pourrais-tu nous dire en quelques mots, comment tu es devenu DJ et producteur?
> Tout a commencé quand j’ai distribué une mix-tape à un promoteur de mon club local le Clubclass. Il a ensuite fait de moi un résident hebdomadaire et à travers de mes soirées j’ai invité des DJs comme les Deep Dish, John Digweed, Danny Howells, X-Press 2, et Pete Tong. Ce fut une vraie période d'apprentissage. J'ai pu rencontrer des tas de gens qui m’ont formé et ce fut une excellente plateforme d’expression. L'exposition que j'ai reçue pendant mes soirées, m’a peu à peu conduit à de plus grands concerts comme celui de Cream et pour la [BBC] Radio 1. J'ai travaillé avec acharnement mes productions et mes soirées, et tout à commencer à partir de là.
Tu as débuté ta carrière comme DJ, notamment avec ta résidence au Clubclass. Ensuite, tu as décidé progressivement de produire certains morceaux. Préfères-tu être considéré comme un DJ ou un producteur? Tu préfères jour en club ou produire un track?
> Je ne pense pas que tu peux être l’un ou l'autre, ces jours sont révolus. Aujourd’hui les deux rôles se mélangent et un DJ peut tout aussi bien produire.
> Je pense que si tu demandes à de nombreux DJs, ils te diront que jouer en club est plus sympa, il y a une ambiance incroyable et c'est génial d'interagir avec les clubbers. Mais aussi il est parfois agréable de se détendre et travailler sur un titre, et quand tu obtiens un bon son, il n’y a rien de plus satisfaisant.
Au début, est-ce que ta famille a compris ce que tu voulais faire dans la vie? Et maintenant sont-ils fiers de ce tu as réussi au fil des années?
> J'ai été très chanceux car dès le premier jour j’ai eu le soutien de ma famille, ils n'ont jamais remis en question mes choix professionels. Ils sont extrêmement fiers de ce que j'ai accompli et je n'aurais pas pu le faire sans leur soutien.
Tu as aussi bossé sous le pseudo de Skylark avec notamment ton titre « That’s more like it » remixé entre autres par Jerry Ropero. Tu as agis sous le pseudo Buick Project avec ton remix fantastique de Timo Maas feat Bryan Molko "First day", que j’adore. Je ne savais pas que tu étais derrière ces projets. Ces pseudos sont-ils morts?
> Pour le moment, Andy Chatterley et moi-même sommes assez occupés à travailler sur nos projets solos et les tournées nous prennent beaucoup de temps. En plus je me concentre sur mon label, mais peut-être qu’un jour nous travaillerons à nouveau ensemble.
Nic, une autre corde de ton arc est ton label Saved Records que tu as lancé en Octobre 2004. Largement considéré comme l’un des labels à la pointe de la musique électronique, vous avez sortis à la fois des tracks de producteurs établis comme Zoo Brazil et Paolo Mojo, mais aussi de jeunes talents comme James Talk (que nous avons interviewé il y a quelques jours) ou encore Shafunkers. Quel est ton rôle au sein du label et comment arrives-tu à jouer ce rôle en plus de celui de producteur et DJ?
> J'avais l'habitude de diriger seul le label, mais avec mon travail de production et les tournées c’est devenu trop difficile. Ainsi mon frère Mark est venu travailler avec moi, et nous gérons conjointement le label. Mark s'occupe de la gestion au jour le jour de Saved. Il fait un travail brillant et Saved marche beaucoup plus facilement maintenant.
Tu viens du Royaume-Uni, y a t-il un ou deux artistes anglais que tu voudrais nous présenter aujourd'hui?
> Je vous recommanderais d’aller voir le travail de Gary Beck et de Jordan Peak signé sur mon label.
Par ailleurs Nic, qu'est-ce que tu connais de la scène française de musique électronique? Y a t-il des artistes que tu connais personnellement? Dont tu aimes le travail? En effet, tu viens à Paris le 29 Janvier pour un mix au Queen.
> Je suis vraiment impatient de venir jouer à Paris, ce n'est pas un endroit où je joue souvent et ça rend donc l’événement spécial. Actuellement j’aime vraiment le travail de Clio, il a signé quelques sons sur mon label Saved et c’est un producteur talentueux. Je suis également un grand fan de Paul Rich et de son label Quartz Rec.
Et à part la musique, quels sont tes hobbies?
> Passer du temps avec mes amis et ma famille, je passe beaucoup de temps loin de la maison, alors quand je suis chez moi j’aime bien me détendre avec eux.
