Allianoi défendu par Placido Domingo auprès de Tayyip Ergogan, Premier Ministre turc

PLACIDO DOMINGO LANCE UN APPEL PRESSANT AU PREMIER MINISTRE TURC POUR SAUVER LE SITE ANTIQUE D’ALLIANOI
 
La Haye, 6 janvier 2011 – Dans une lettre énergique adressée personnellement au Premier ministre turc, M. Tayyip Erdoğan, Plácido Domingo - le ténor et chef d’orchestre mondialement connu qui est Président d’Europa Nostra, la fédération européenne des associations du patrimoine culturel - lance un appel pressant au Premier ministre Erdoğan de reconsidérer la décision d’inonder le site exceptionnel de bains romains d’Allianoi et d’empêcher ainsi une telle tragédie culturelle.
 
Après des années de protestations, il semble maintenant que la dernière heure est venue pour Allianoi, le magnifique site archéologique situé près de Bergama à l’ouest de la Turquie. L’inondation attendue d’Allianoi, suite à la construction du barrage d’irrigation de Yortanli, signifierait la perte de la totalité du site datant du 2ème siècle ap. J-C.
 
Dans son appel, Plácido Domingo souligne : « Nous sommes nombreux à être profondément persuadés que sauver le site antique d’Allianoi apporterait des bénéfices durables à la population locale turque. Un barrage d’irrigation n’aiderait en effet qu’une partie des personnes travaillant dans le secteur agricole et seulement pour un nombre limité d’années. En revanche, sauver ce trésor antique nous enrichirait tous, la population de Turquie comme le reste des européens, pour les générations à venir. En outre, au lieu de disparaître sous les flots, un site d’une importance archéologique telle qu’Allianoi peut devenir un puissant atout pour un développement touristique local durable, impliquant la création de nombreux nouveaux emplois. »
 
« De nombreuses manifestations locales et internationales ont appelé à la sauvegarde d’Allianoi, démontrant clairement que les peuples attachent énormément de valeur à leur histoire et à leur mémoire, donnant de la profondeur et du sens à leurs vies. Tous les efforts possibles doivent dès lors être consentis pour préserver de tels lieux – tel Allianoi – qui nous connectent avec les générations précédentes et dont nous avons, à notre tour, la responsabilité de transmettre aux générations futures. », a ajouté Placido Domingo dans son appel au Premier ministre Erdoğan.
 
Dans sa lettre, Plácido Domingo a réitéré la proposition d’Europa Nostra d’aider le gouvernement turc à trouver une alternative pour Allianoi qui deviendrait une source de fierté pour toutes les parties concernées.
En soutien à la lettre de son Président, Europa Nostra appelle urgemment les citoyens concernés de toute l’Europe et au-delà à envoyer un court message contre l’inondation d’Allianoi au Premier ministre turc, M. Tayyip Erdoğan.

HAS ALLIANOI’S LAST HOUR STRUCK? PLACIDO DOMINGO MAKES URGENT APPEAL TO SAVE ANCIENT CITY

In a strong and personal letter to the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan, Plácido Domingo - world renowned tenor and conductor who is President of Europa Nostra, the pan-European Federation of Heritage Organisations - urges Prime Minister Erdogan to reconsider the flooding of the unique Roman spa settlement of Allainoi and thus to prevent such a cultural tragedy from happening.
After years of protests, it now seems that the last hour has struck for Allianoi, the magnificent archaeological site located near Bergama in western Turkey. The expected flooding of Allianoi, as the result of the Yortanli irrigation dam scheme, would result in the loss of the entire site, dating from the 2nd century AD.
In his appeal, Plácido Domingo stresses: “We are numerous who strongly believe that saving the ancient site of Allianoi would bring lasting and sustainable benefits to the local population in Turkey. An irrigation dam would indeed help some people working in the agricultural sector yet only for a limited time. By contrast, saving this ancient treasure would enrich us all, the people of Turkey as well as the other Europeans, for generations to come. Moreover, instead of disappearing under the water, a site of such archaeological importance like Allianoi can become a powerful asset for a sustainable local tourist development, with the creation of many new jobs.”
“Large local and international protests have called for Allianoi to be saved, clearly demonstrating that people attach great value to their history and memory. This gives depth and meaning to their lives. Every effort should therefore be invested in preserving those places - such as Allianoi - which connect us with previous generations and which we, in our turn, have the responsibility to transmit to future generations.” Domingo added in his appeal to Prime Minister Erdogan.
In his letter, Plácido Domingo reiterated Europa Nostra’s keen readiness to help the Turkish government find an alternative for Allianoi which would become a source of pride for all parties concerned.
In support to its President’s appeal, Europa Nostra urgently calls upon concerned citizens from all over Europe and beyond to send a simple message against the flooding of Allianoi to the top decision-maker in Turkey, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan.

Threatened future for Ancient Roman Spa
The preparatory work, begun on 10 April 2010, is complete, fulfilling the technical requirements for the planned flooding of Allianoi, an outstanding Roman Bath complex and town situated near Bergama in western Turkey. The inundation of Allianoi, as a part of the Yortanli irrigation dam scheme, will result in the loss of the entire site, of the ancient spa town, including an impressive preserved thermal spa, dating from the 2nd century AD. Since 2005 Europa Nostra has repeatedly expressed deep concern at the alarming and immediate threat facing this important archaeological site, to the highest levels of the Turkish Government and to the Press.
