Well, well, well, tonight, it is Christmas. Before that, Absolut Noise gives you a present : the brand new Penny Century single James Hurley! It is an AbsExclu : you cannot find this song anywhere else. Actually, I was supposed to post it at 3pm, but something quite unexpected and unique happened to me today : I was stuck between 10h30 and 16h on a plane, without Internet, at the Orly Airport of Paris. Yes, in the plane, but on the airstrip. During 5h30. I will not go into détails, but snow made things complicated and we waited and waited and waited…. Well, merry Christmas !

Actually, this situation can be compared to the state in which Penny Century stand right now: their second album Friends & Family has been finished a long time ago but it took them ages to eventually release it. I even heard they were close to split. Let’s hope their new songs will put them back on tracks.

To be fair, they deserve it. They already gave us a hint with Fiver - first excerpt of their new album published in It’s a trap – that their sound has evolved a little bit compare to their debut. James Hurley is a confirmation. Do not expect a revolution though: Penny Century still plays melodic pop music, but Julia's voice is a little bit more nostalgic than before and there is even a discrete electro touch. More important, like in every PC tune, you surprise yourself whisteling the melody after only one listen. Isn't it the definition of a great pop tune?

Bon, bon, bon, ce soir c’est Noël. Avant ça, Absolut Noise vous offre un cadeau : le nouveau single de Penny Century James Hurley ! Il s’agit d’une AbsExclu : vous ne trouverez nulle part ailleurs le morceau. Pour être franc, je devais le publier dans mon blog à 15h, mais un contre-temps inattendu et plutôt unique en son genre m’est arrivé : je suis resté bloqué aujourd’hui de 10h30 à 16h dans un avion, sans Internet, à l’aéroport d’Orly. Oui, dans un avion, mais un avion cloué au sol. Pendant 5h30. Je ne rentrerai pas dans les détails, mais la neige a rendu les choses compliquées et nous avons dû attendre, et attendre, et attendre… bref joyeux Noël !

En fait, cette situation est comparable à l’état dans lequel se trouve Penny Century aujourd’hui : leur deuxième album Friends & Family est bouclé depuis des siècles mais ils ne parviennent pas à le sortir. J'ai même entendu dire qu'ils furent proches de splitter. Espérons que leurs nouvelles chansons les remettent en selle.

Ils le méritent. Ils nous avaient déjà donné un premier aperçu avec XX – premier extrait du prochain disque, publié dans It’s a trap – que leur son avait sensiblement évolué. James Hurley le confirme. Il ne s'agit bien-sûr pas d'une révolution : Penny Century fait toujours dans la pop mélodique, mais la voix de Julia est un peu plus nostalgique qu'avant et une discrète touche électro se fait même entendre. Surtout, comme c'est le cas avec chaque morceau de PC, on se surprend à siffloter la mélodie après une seule écoute. N'est-ce pas là la définition d'une chanson pop réussie ?
