A few months ago I did not know what Roller Derby was, then during a girl's evening themed on Girl Power we watched the movie Whip It with Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page (Juno). It was a first introduction to it.
I didn't think about it again until I a saw a big sign for the Asheville League. I remember turning to my husband in surprise: "We have a team here?"; he very knowledgeable "Of course such and such always go to the games."
Shortly after some of my co-worker decided to get together to see them play and I was up for it except that my cousin was arriving the same day to visit us. Thankfully she was up for it and came with an amazing camera (therefore all following pictures are her work).
So what is Roller Derby?
It's a roller skating sport on an oval rink. There are five team members on the rink. One of the team members is assigned as a Jammer and has to pass all the members of the opposite team in a set tie. There is also a Pivot and Blockers whose goal is to help their Jammer get through but block the opposite team's. The position played is recognized by the helmet cover: star for the Jammer, Sripe for the Pivot, nothing for the Blockers. Positions are switched throughout the game.
The bout (game) lasts 1 hour total with two halves each made of 2 minute jams.
There are falls, sometimes pushed sometimes not, speed and a good spirit.
We saw the bout of Asheville's Blue Ridge Rollergirls (in blue) vs. Atlanta Rumble B's (in grey and yellow). Asheville won 163 to 103 but mind you it is the B league and therefore not Atlanta's best team.
Rigor Morticia, Drag'n SlayHer, etc.
The outfits are funny, there are the Mean Girls with a tomb-boy look and war paint and the Dolls with their fishnet stockings, mini-skirts and garters. How can it not bring the crowds? Falls, fun outfits and speed, who can do better?
Not to mention their acting names making the best of puns: Pulp Friction, Rigor Morticia, Drag'n Slayher, etc.
And let's not forget the atmosphere. Even without knowing the rules it was easy to know when our team scored thanks to the roars of the crowd. Also the fan's signs, the little girls waiting for an autograph of their idols and more gave a fun spirit to the game.
It was really neat, a fun sport, not too long, still a team sport and a good role model for little girls. I think I'll go again, especially since the wife a friend just made it into the team.
