Bob Dylan – Girl From The North Country

My favorite Dylan tune. It’s a beautifully heartbreaking song. The idea of wanting to look after someone that you may never see again, to make sure they are alright, even someone who may never want to talk to you again. That kind of blind, unconditional love is beautiful. Love in the face of hate. Production wise, it just sounds so nice and creamy, I really love Dylan’s voice during this period.

Ma préférée de Bob Dylan. C’est une chanson belle et touchante. L’idée de chercher quelqu’un qu’on risque de ne jamais revoir, s’assurer que les gens aillent bien, même s’il s’agit de quelqu’un qui ne veut plus vous parler. Ce genre d’amour aveugle et inconditionnel est magnifique. L’amour qui frappe la haine. La production est intelligente, tellement lisse et crémeuse, j’aime particulièrement la voix de Dylan de cette période.

Bon Iver – Re: Stacks

I like this one for several of the same reasons I like the Dylan song, I think the two are quite similar actually. This whole Bon Iver album is wonderful of course, but for this last song to be stripped down to nothing else but one guitar and one voice is a perfect way to end it. Justin is from Wisconsin, which is where I grew up and hope to return some day, so I’ve always had a close connection to this music. Also, as a musician myself, he made it « cool » to be from Wisconsin, so I always appreciate that.

Je l’aime pour les même raisons que celles de Dylan. Je pense que les deux sont très similaires en fait. Tout dans cet album de Bon Iver est merveilleux bien sûr, mais cette chanson déshabillée jusqu’à la guitare et la voix est une façon parfaite de le terminer. Justin est originaire du Visconsin, là où j’ai grandit et où j’espère retourner un jour, alors j’ai toujours été particulièrement proche de sa musique. Par ailleurs, en tant que musicien, il a rendu « cool » le fait de venir du Visconsin, j’ai toujours apprécié ça.

Dirty Projectors - The Glad Fact

This is from an early Dirty Projectors album, and this song is all about attitude. I love the sound of this so much. For the album I’m finishing up right now, I basically started off by wanting to make it sound exactly like this song. Such warm distortion, clean guitar and vocals, with that little bit of synth. Dirty Projectors is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I could sum up my love for them with this one song. Their newer stuff is much cleaner and more complex, but it all comes back to the raw emotion and nakedness that is so present in this song.

C’est extrait d’un des premiers albums de Dirty Projectors, cette chanson est essentiellement de la frime. J’adore le son. De l’album I’m finishing up right now,  j’ai commencé en essayant de faire tout comme le son de cette chanson. Il y a une telle distorsion chaleureuse, une guitare et un chant propres, avec juste un peu de synthé. Dirty Projectors est un de mes groupes préférés de tous les temps, et cette chanson résume bien l’affection que je leur porte. Leurs tous derniers trucs  sont plus propres et plus complexe, mais tout revient aux émotions pures et à la nudité de ce morceaux.

tUnE-YaRdS – Sunlight

Along with the previous track, this song/album by tUnE-YaRdS was one of my « models » for the production of my current album. I actually got into tUnE-YaRdS after I saw her open for Dirty Projectors at a show in Chicago. I like this for many of the same reasons as the Dirty Projectors song – raw emotion, with a bit of dirty beauty here and there. The song is very sparse and bare and I think that helps the message along very nicely.

Tout comme le morceaux précédent, cette chanson / album de tUnE-YaRdS faisaient partie de mes modèles pour la production de mon album du moment. En fait, je me suis mis à écouter tUnE-YaRdS après l’avoir vu en première partie de Dirty Projectors à Chicago. J’aime ça pour toutes les même raisons que j’aime la chanson de Dirty Projectors – l’émotion pure, avec un peu de beauté entachée ici et là. La chanson est si clairsemée et épurée, je pense que ça accompagne vraiment joliment la musique.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy

This will always be one of my favorite songs off of one of my favorite albums ever. I put this on the list because it echoes and sums up many of the themes brought forth by the other four songs. Raw emotion, basic ingredients (guitar and voice), a yearning for a different place or a different person. This is not only a great song, but a great performance — doing a cover of this song could never give it what Jeff gave it with this recording. So intense and heartfelt.

Ca restera toujours l’une de mes chansons préférés de l’un de mes albums préférés de tous les temps. J’ai choisi cette chanson parce qu’elle renvoie et résume beaucoup des thèmes apportés par les quatre autres chanson. Emotion pure, des ingrédients de base (guitare et voie), un aspiration à être ailleurs ou à être quelqu’un d’autre. Ce n’est pas seulement une grande chanson, mais aussi une grande performance — faire une reprise de ce morceau ne pourrai jamais faire passer ce que Jeff a donné lors de l’enregistrement. Tellement intense et sincère.
