Vase Blue Shino de Sakai Hiroshi

I first saw the work of Sakai Hiroshi(b.1960) in 2003 for the first time in person. Before that I had seen photos, especially from juried exhibitions such as the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, Mashiko Ceramic Exhibition, Mino International Ceramic Exhibition, International Competition for Contemporary Ceramic Art, Faenza and Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, also in exhibitions in Taiwan and Korea. I enjoy the way Sakai has created his own izome (indigo blue) crackled glaze on his jars that create a most amazing texture.

That can be seen on this very modern Ai-iro (indigo blue color–lightened by the ‘icing’ glaze) jar. The Shino is heavily crackled and rises up to the small mouth in the raised bands. Sakai studied with recently named Living National Treasure Kato Kozo (Setoguro)—please see e-yakimono.net for more on Kato—and now creates from his studio in Toki city. In perfect condition with a signed box, 35cm.tallx22.0cm.wide, signed on base. A cooling heavenly blue summer color..
