Oh Vous Devriez Demander la Nationalité!

Oh You Should Ask for the Nationality!
Parfois les gens se melent vraiment de ce qui ne les regardent pas.
Cliente:"Oh vous etes d'où? D'Afrique du Sud?"
Moi:"Non de France."
-"Ah et vous etes la depuis combien de temps?"
-"Quatre ans."
-"Et vous etes la pour rester ou pas?"
-"Je reste, mon mari est americain et il ne parle pas francais."
-"Oh mais vous devez avoir la double nationalité alors."
-"Ah ben non, voyez vous, c'est tout un procede, il faut d'abord payer pour obtenir la carte verte, puis comme on etait maries depuis moins de 2 ans payer de nouveau pour avoir la carte de dix ans, et ensuite il faudra payer de nouveau si je decide de demander la nationalite americaine."
Bon jusque la ca allait, les apriori des gens sur l'immigration ca me touche alors j'essaye de les eduquer un peu au passage quand ils croient que la nationalite est automatique et gratuite. Non la ou j'ai senti mon sang bouillir c'est quand elle a dit:
-"Oh mais il vous faut demander la nationalite americaine!"
Non mais de quoi je me mele? Je suis restee calme et au lieu de lui dire "Tout le monde ne veux pas etre americain" et j'ai repondu à coté en lui disant:
-"Vous savez il va nous falloir encore payer"
-"Oui mais c'est un tellement bon investissement sur le long terme."
-"Vous savez on viens déjà de payer votre gouvernement 1500 dollars juste pour rester ensemble alors je crois qu'on va attendre un peu."
Quand je me suis enfin debarasser d'elle je suis aller a l'arriere pour fulminer.
Non mais franchement, on parle de nationalité là, pas du dernier film a voir ou de changer de couleur de chemise. C'est un peu comme la religion, c'est un sujet très personnel, un choix lixée a l'identité. Ce n'est franchement pas un sujet que je souhait aborder avec des étrangers, encore moins des clients auquel je ne peux pas répondre ce que je pense.
Je connais beaucoup de gens qui ne souhaitent pas prendre la nationalité americaine, certain car ils perdraient leur nationalité de naissance (tous les pays ne reconnaissent pas la double nationalité), d'autre ne veulent pas se retrouver avec l'obligation de payer des impots aux USA quel que soit le pays ou ils vivent. Personellement non seulement je ne peux pas encore la demander (dans un an) mais surtout je ne m'y sens pas prête. Je ne veux pas la double nationalité juste pour profiter des avantages, si je choisi de prendre la nationalité américaine ce sera par choix, il me faudra être prête à accepter l'identité que cela représente et pour le moment ce n'est pas le cas.

Client: "Where are you from? South Africa?"
Me: "No France."
-"Ah and how long have you been here for?"
-"Four years."
-"And you're here to stay or not?"
-"Here to stay, my husband is American and he doesn't speak French."
-"Oh so you mush have dual citizenship!"
-"Well no you see, it's a whole process, first you have to pay to get the green card, then if you're married for less thant two years you need to remove the conditions and pay to get the ten year green card, and then maybe you can apply for citizenship."
Until then it was fine, people's notions of immigration is something that touches me so I try to educate them a bit when they thing that nationality is automatic and free. No when I felt my blood boil is when she said:
"Oh but you should ask for the American citizenship."
Excuse me? Mind your own business! I remained calm and instead of telling her that "Not everyone wants to be Americain" I stayed neutral and said:
-"Well you know we're going to have to pay again."
-"But it's such a great investment on the long term."
-"Well you know we already paid $1500 to your governement so I think we'll wait a bit."
When I finally got rid of her, I went in the back to rant.

Frankly, we're speaking about nationality here, not the last movie to see or to change shirt color. It's a bit like religion, a very personnal matter, a choice linked to identity. It's really not a subject I want to discuss with strangers, even less with clients to whom I can not tell what I think.
I know a lot of people who don't wish to take the American nationality, some because they would loose their other nationality (some countries don't recognize dual citizenship), others because they don't want to have to pay taxes to US no matter where they live in the world. In my case not only can I not apply for it yet (I have to wait an other year) but mainly I don't feel ready. I don't want dual citizenship just to benefit of the advantages, I want to pick the American nationality by choice, I will have to be ready to accept the identity it represents and right now it's not the case.
