Septembre 1986 : sortie de l'album "Somewhere In Time" (#3 UK-#11 US), produit par Martin Birch avec une pochette exceptionnelle signée comme à son habitude par Derek Riggs.

L'album introduit les guitares-synthés, une nouveauté qui fut mal perçu par les fans, voyant leur groupe favori se diriger vers une musique plus commerciale.

Il n'en est rien, au contraire le groupe évolue vers un metal progressif avec des titres plus long allant de 5 à 8 minutes.

Adrian Smith est pour beaucoup dans la réalisation de cet album et bizarrement, Bruce Dickinson ne signe aucun titre.

Deux nouveaux singles :

"Wasted years (Smith)/Reach out (Colwell) & Sheriff of Huddersfield (Murray-Harris-Smith-Dickinson-Mcbrain)" (#18 UK).

"Stranger in a strange land (Smith)/That girl (Barnett-Goldsworth-Jupp) & Juanita (Barnacle-O'Neil)" (#22 UK).

De septembre 1986 à mai 1987 : Somewhere On Tour avec 148 concerts de Belgrade à Osaka.
