We're lucky in Asheville there are plenty of independent restaurants serving really great cuisine. But we're even luckier because we live within walking distance to the one with the best breakfast in town. And when I say the best, I'm not just talking subjectively. Indeed Sunny Point Cafe was one of the four finalists of ABC's Best Breakfast Challenge on Good Morning America.
This fun little restaurant is casual. When you arrive there, no hostess to take your name, just a list where you put your name before sitting down and waiting to be called. Nearby a thermos with coffee, for a few dollars you can get a never ending cup.
We like to read the menu while waiting.
You can be seated outside under the brand new veranda.
Or inside, close to the kitchen and the black board with the list of extras (desserts and more) in sight.
There is always the daily specials, but also little touches that I love: a bouquet of fresh flowers and a local berry jam that is killer on their homemade biscuits.
Usually I get tempted by their special, and I almost did with their French Toast of banana bread with chocolate and fresh strawberries, but I wanted to try the dish that got them nominated for best breakfast: the huevos rancheros, a plate of black bean cakes, tomatillo salsa, chorizo sausage, eggs cooked to order, more salsa and sauteed potatoes finished with some tortilla chips. I did not have to eat again until dinner.
Hubby went for the Breakfast Burrito and couldn't even finish it.
The restaurant uses a lot of products from local farms, they even have their own garden with herbs and more just a few steps from the restaurant.
If you come in the area I can only recommend this restaurant, you can't go wrong with the menu. If you're there on a Sunday ask if they have any special baked goods.
The waiters are dressed with their own personal style and you might as much meet local hippie parents with their child playing with the restaurant's Mr Potato, a couple of retired people or someone in a suit.
