En 2004, le “Phantom” devient un film, réalisé par Joel Schumacher, respectant à la lettre, le spectacle mis en scène par Harold Prince.

ANALYSE :

Une excellente retranscription du spectacle sur film, qui n’évite pas toutefois une certaine lourdeur (Raoul sous l’eau et les scènes en noir et blanc).

Certaines scènes ont été altérées, le chandelier par exemple s’écrase sur scène vers la fin du deuxième acte, alors qu’il s’écrasait au théâtre à la fin du premier acte.

Une nouvelle chanson fut écrite pour l’occasion “Learn to be lonely”, mais refusant de changer un spectacle en tous point parfait, il fut décidé de ne l’utiliser que pour les crédits de fin.

C’est d’ailleurs la seule chanson que Minnie Driver chante, puisqu’elle est doublée par Margaret Preece dans le film.

Si Gérard Butler et Patrick Wilson sont un poil en dessous des interprètes originaux, Emmy Rossum réussit le pari insensé d'égaler Sarah Brightman, pourtant exceptionnelle dans ce rôle écrit pour elle.

Personnellement, si j’aime beaucoup ce film et le double CD qui va avec, je reste trop attaché à la version originale.

J’ai eu la chance de voir le  “Phantom” sur scène deux fois à Londres et une fois à Bâle et à l’exception des Misérables de Schoenberg et Boublil, il reste l’un des plus beaux spectacles que j’ai eu l’occasion de voir.
