CINEMA: BULLE CANNOISE #6, la bataille pour la typographie de Mao/the battle for Mao's typography

Les séances de la sélection Un Certain Regard ont traditionnellement lieu dans la salle Debussy. Bien plus petite que le Grand Théâtre Lumière, elle est aussi plus agréable et conviviale. C'est là qu'a eu lieu hier la projection du film I wish I knew de Jia Zhang-Ke, en présence du réalisateur et de son actrice Zhao Tao.Screenings of the Un Certain Regard selection traditionaly take place in the Debussy theater. Dans les deux films, des personnes interviewées évoquent l'histoire troublée de la Chine et ses répercussions sur leurs vies et celles de leurs familles. Aussi, nous avons par hasard tous deux choisi la même typographie créée par Mao pour composer nos titres. La principale différence, c'est que I wish I knew est en compétition dans la sélection Un Certain Regard tandis que Golden Wedding est sélectionné au Short Film Corner. Surtout, Jia est un réalisateur mondialement célèbre, alors que j'en suis un obscur. Il emporte donc cette bataille ; il ne gagnera pas la guerre.Il y a des soirs, on se dit que rien ne va se passer, et tout peut changer d'une minute à l'autre. C'est ce qui s'est produit hier soir au pavillon Belgique au village du festival. Une jeune chanteuse était en représentation et cela a attiré mon attention. En réalité, ce mini-concert était donné en l'honneur de Georges Lautner, un cinéaste bien connu du public français pour avoir notamment fait tourner à de nombreuses reprises Jean-Paul Belmondo. C'est justement cet acteur qui sera le sujet d'un prochain film retraçant sa propre vie et serait présenté l'an prochain.Celui qui le réalise n'est autre que Jean-François Domenech : ce nom ne vous dit peut-être rien, mais pour moi il me rappelle ma première télé à Canal+ en 1996. En effet nous étions tous deux passionné du Festival de Cannes et nous étions invités pour en parler. Depuis il a cru en sa bonne étoile, tout en travaillant comme directeur d'un Mc Donalds il n'a pas laché, et a su créé sa chance. Il croit en Cannes et Cannes croit en lui. Chapeau l'artiste !Dans un autre contexte à deux pas de là, un chauffeur d'une voiture officielle 607 se faisait contrôler par la police municipale, il semblerait qu'il était en état d'ébriété, il a du souffler dans le ballon, comme quoi personne n'est à l'abri d'un contrôle !Les escabeaux accrochés les uns aux autres devant le Palais font partie intégrante de ce festival, et beaucoup de gens s'en servent pour photographier leurs idoles. Les badauds ayant provisoirement déserté cet endroit, j'en profitai pour surveiller ces instruments si fétiches au festival : pourquoi ne pas leur attribuer des vigiles ?Je finissais ma soirée au bar du Martinez qui est un endroit embué de paillettes et de personnages d'une blondeur déconcertante dont les discussions sont tout aussi blondes. Il est vrai que certaines personnes s'inventent une vie même le temps d'une nuit. En regardant une jeune femme asiatique tout seule à une table pendant près de 2 heures, je me disais qu'elle n'était pas forcément dans la vie qu'elle aurait imaginée...À mes cotés, un couple d'une cinquantaine d'année me parlait de leur rêves de tourner, de faire de la figuration. Ils étaient bien sympathiques mais réellement dans l'impossibilité d'atteindre leurs souhaits. L'imagination, le fantasme, alimentent les nombreux mirages du festival... Also, we both chose the same typography designed by Chairman Mao to compose our titles. The main difference is that I wish I knew is in competition for Un Certain Regard, while Golden Wedding is selected by the Short Film Corner. But mostly, Jia is a world-famous filmmaker, while I am an obscure one. He therefore wins this battle, but he won't win the war.Some nights, one thinks that nothing is going to happen, but then everything can change in an instant. That's what happened last night at the Belgium Pavillion in the International Village. A young singer was performing, and that caught my attention. In fact, that concert was given for George Lautner, a well-known French filmmaker who notably worked many times with Jean-Paul Belmondo. The actor is actually the subject of a film that will tell his life and which might be presented at next year's Festival.The director is none other than Jean-François Domenech : the name may be unknown to you, but it reminded me of the first time I went on TV, in 1996. As it happened, he were both fans of the Festival and we had been invited on the live show by Canal+ to share our passion. Since then, it seems that Jean-François followed on his dream while earning his living at a local McDonald's, and eventualy managed to make his own luck. He believes in Cannes, and Cannes believes in him. Congrats!On an unrelated subject, not far from the Belgium Pavillion, the driver of an official Festival car is being controled by the city police. Perhaps was he drunk? No matter what, he had to be checked. No-one escapes a police control!The stepladders, which are all chained together in front of the Palais, are an integral part of the Festival as many people use them to photograph their idols. Since the bystanders were temporarily gone, I took a closer look at those Festival's mascot objects and wonder why there wouldn't allocate agents to their protection?I ended up at the Martinez bar, a place usually clouded over sequin and disconcerting blonde individuals whose conversations are blond as well. Some people invent a life for themselves, if only for one night. While observing a young Asian woman who sat alone at a table for almost two hours, I thought that she wasn't necessarily living the life she thought she would have...By my side, a middle aged couple was telling me of their dream to act. Although sympathetic, they seemed unable to fulfill their own wishes. Imagination and fantasy feed the many mirages of the Festival...
