August, my internship ended, I was now working on my "thesis". Hubby had just accepted a promotion that would allow him to work more traditional hours (vs. the 4 days in a row nights included).
It was a weird summer though. In July my dad had left my mom. A difficult time even if I knew it was coming. Thankfully Hubby was there for me.
Not to mention there was enough to do to distract me.
We did a long hike to the summit of Cold Mountain. The summit that inspired the title of the book and the movie. Ah I still remember it, we left from Danny Boon's summer camp, and at some point I red the map wrong and thought we were farther along that we really were. It made me feel tired so much quicker when the gap just wouldn't come at the next curve. We still had several hours to go. The moral is: better not to look at the map.
It's a wilderness area so the trail was less obvious.
What a relief to reach the gap.
However I was a bit disapointed by the summit. Not much of a view, it was covered by shrubs ad it was difficult to make the difference between the official summit and the geological marker and the false summit. In the end I think what really made me happy was to be on a summit whose name I had heard about in France.
Shortly before my departure, we took some vacation. The day we took the road was also Hubby's 30th birthday. Let me tell you: I had some fun. A few days before already I had gotten him a drawing pad. But I had a few surprises planned...
I baked a chocolate cake before we left. Once in Florida we stopped at a rest area and took turns to go inside. Once he got back to the car he found his chocolate cake with a spongebob candle. I also got him Homer Simpsons sleepers (I wanted spongebob's but couldn't find them). You think I stopped there? Think again.
When we arrived at his sister's in Palm Beach Garden, Suzanne (whom I met that day) had prepared (and almost burnt) a chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. I got the spongebob candle out again, a card and since it was his 30th and that I wanted to mark that, I also offered him a silver bracelet. I would have told you that he must still remember it all but after asking him all he could think about was the spongebob candle!
We were in Palm Beach and for the occasion his sister took us to Sloan's for ice cream. The inside was as pink ascan be. While I don't remember the ice cream much, I sure have quite a memory of the bathrooms...
You see the door is transparent (as shown by Hubby), it's only when the lock is closed that the glass fills with smoke thick enough not to see through.
We also went to an art museaum of which I remember little if only the cool stair case and the entrance's ceiling.
Palm Beach and Florida it's also the Palm Trees of course.
We left Florida shortly before Katrina's arrical. I still remember being in the living room, Suzanne told us there was going to be a guest the day I took the plane: Katrina. At first we didn't understand, until she told us it was a hurricane. At the time no one could imagine that name would brand memories with the terrible damages it would create not in Florida but in Louisiana. To end our vacation we spent a few days at my godparents. Where it all started a year before. The picture below was taken in Blue Spring, a gorgeous natural spring and water hole in northern Florida.
Some times later took the place. Knowing that I wouldn't have to wait too long to see him again. Inded I had a trip planned for december: North Carolina and Hawaii!
