Have I told you that my husband has Japanese blood? His great grand-mother was Japanese. I truly believe that it gives him super powers when it comes to making Sushi Rolls.
To do that at home and enjoy it.
You'll need:
-Sushi Rice
2 cups of sushi rice (short white rice, sticky) cooked according to instructions. Be careful not to use metal! Put it in a glass or plastic bowl and use a wooden or plastic spoon.
Dissolve together:
2 Tbsp of rice vinegar
1tsp powder sugar
1 tsp salt
Pour it over the rice. Don't stir it but toss it.
-Nori sheets
-Ingredients to put in your sushi
For us it was:
Smoked salmon
Shitake mushrooms cooked in mirin and tamari soy sauce
Avocado
Orange bell pepper
Carrots
Cucumber
Cream cheese
In a small bowl mix some water and salt. It's to dip your fingers so the rice doesn't stick to your hands. Use when needed.
Take a handful of rice and spread it on the nori with your fingers. Repeat the process to cover about3/4 of the nori sheet for a rice layer (about 5 millimeter) leaving some space on the bottom edge.
Once the rice is spread, place your ingredients on the middle of the rice layer. Combine the ingredients depending on your tastes.
Wet about an inch of the top of the Nori sheet. Then use your fingers to delicately roll the sheet on itself. That's where I tell you that Hubby has Japanese blood because he doesn't lie to use the bamboo mats, he finds it easier to do it all by hand.
It has to be done fairly quickly so the edge of the Nori won't dry out. The water will help the sheet stick together and make it a nice roll. Smooth the edge with more water on your fingers if needed.
Place the roll on the cutting board. With the help of a serrated knife and with quick movements, slice your sushi rolls.
Place on pretty sushi plates offered for your wedding (optional), take out the chopsticks, wasabi, pickled ginger and enjoy.
Don't leave on a trip to Mexico the day after with your sushi or you'll have to throw them away after a long plane ride.
