This show was professionally filmed at the Olympia theatre in Paris, France on December 19, 1970. This show is very rare, and this is one of the best copies available. There have been a couple of other versions of this show in circulation that were sourced from 2nd or 3rd Generation VHS copies.
This new Snivlle Remastered Edition is sourced from a newly surfaced "BETA Max HQ" transfer. The tape had been recorded when the footage first aired on BBC1 television. The concert itself was performed while Sabbath were on tour in Europe, supporting the "new" LP titled, "Paranoid". This release recently underwent the process of being remastered with Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. The incredible NeatVideo for Premiere Pro plug-in was also used to denoise and apply high resolution enhancement to the footage. NeatVideo goes far beyond the capabilities of most freely available denoising filters. It uses a series of computationally precise algorithms that enable it to apply 'intelligent sharpening' without inducing any unwanted halo-like effects. The final results do not result in softened imagery.
The audio was remastered with Adobe Audition 1.5 and a number of elite audio plug-in filters. This disc contains a carefully remastered PCM audio mix offering dynamic volume and fidelity. The clarity of the sound track is greatly improved with an extended frequency response. It retains only a hint of the original tape hiss.
The edited footage was then frame-served to CCE 2.67 SP and encoded at a very high bitrate of 7990 kbps with advanced vertical filter effect and high quantization enabled. Unless you are lucky enough to find a digital transfer or a 1st Gen copy off of the original broadcaster's reel, I believe that this version is one of the best in circulation.
The extensive digital processing that this show has undergone took it from being a dark, grainy cludge into a pleasantly watchable piece of vintage concert footage.
Concert review Paris ‘70 is one of the more famous Sabbath films, since is one of the only pro-shot films of the band during the early 70’s and an excellent one too! Originally filmed on 16mm for the Belgian TV program “Pop Shop”, it was later re-broadcast on British TV by Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, where it aired in 2-30 minute episodes. Footage from this show later appeared on some official releases, such as THE BLACK SABBATH STORY – VOLUME 1 and Ozzy Osbourne’s DON’T BLAME ME autobiography. It goes without saying that this is one of the most essential Black Sabbath videos to have in your collection.
The performance is top notch and it is the earliest known pro-shot film of the band playing a full concert. Ozzy does sing some different lyrics for many songs and improvises some new ones during “Hand Of Doom” and “War Pigs”. During “War Pigs”, he even resorts to the original lyrics for “Walpurgis” during one verse. Although it wasn’t uncommon for Ozzy to forget lyrics, I do think it's more likely that the songs were still somewhat new to the band, at this show.
