What can we expect from 2009, in the Swedish music scene? Well, there are some "new" artists/bands who might explode this year. Here is one of them...
Ok, this is not actually a "new" band and they have already released a record, but Penny Century (my Q&A with them here) is getting better and better, so 2009 might be their year (a new EP its on its way). Named upon the first Bear Quartet album title, PC managed to make a song, called Just Because, featuring Mattias Alkberg himself (the BQ's singer).
Just like this recent post, Matti Alkberg does my work for today : he tells us everything about his collaboration with Penny Century :
"The singer in Penny Century, Julia, is the sister of Martin who sings with Vapnet, Sibiria and Hospitalet who I know from, I don't know really, from aftershow parties at festivals way back or something. Last summer (2006) Mattias Alkberg BD played some festivals with Vapnet and I think Julia was somehow involved in booking me for a poetry reading at Storsjöyran in Östersund. And we sort of kept in touch. She rang me up and asked if I would like to sing a duet with her, and I said sure. I had heard one older record with Penny but wasn't that impressed, not that it was bad or anything, it just wasn't what I was into. But since they are called what they are called, and flattery goes a long way in my book, I sort of kept my eye on them. Without ever interfering of course. Like a god. I think their new songs are great but I think they might´ve been even better without my involvement. Maybe the simple fact is that they've grown up and I've just grown old".

Que peut-on attendre de 2009 dans la scène musicale suédoise ? Et bien, certains "nouveaux" artistes/groupes pourraient véritablement exploser cette année. En voici un...
Ok, ce n'est pas vraiment un "nouveau" groupe et ils ont déjà sorti un album, mais Penny Century (mon Questions/Réponses avec eux ici) ne cesse de s'améliorer. 2009 pourrait bien être leur année (un nouvel EP est en route). Ces petits gars avaient déjà piqué le titre du premier album du Bear Quartet comme nom de groupe, ils ont désormais réussi à enroler Mattias Alkberg lui-même (le chanteur de BQ) pour leur nouvelle chanson Just Because.
Comme pour ce récent billet, c'est à Matti Alkberg que je confie la suite de mon texte du jour. Il nous raconte sa collaboration avec Penny Century :
"La chanteuse de Penny Century, Julia, est la soeur de Martin qui chante dans Vapnet, Sibiria et Hospitalet. Je le connais de je ne sais où, peut-être d'un after après un concert lors d'un festival il y a longtemps. L'été dernier (en 2006) Mattias Alkberg BD a joué dans des festivals en compagnie de Vapnet et il me semble que Julia ait été impliquée dans l'organisation d'une de mes lectures de poème à Storsjöyran dans la ville d'Östersund. On est plus ou moins resté en contact. Elle m'a appelé pour me demander si je serais partant pour chanter en duo avec elle, et j'ai dit pas de problème. J'avais entendu un vieux disque de Penny mais n'avais pas été vraiment impressionné : ce n'est pas tant que c'était mauvais, c'est plutôt que cela ne correspondait pas à mes goûts du moment. Mais à partir du moment où ils s'appellent "Penny Century", et avec toute l'aspect flatteur que cela suppose, j'ai quand même gardé un oeil sur eux. Sans interférer bien-sûr. Comme un dieu. Je trouve leurs nouvelles chansons excellentes, mais je pense qu'elles auraient été encore meilleures si je n'y avais pas pris part. C'est un fait : eux ont grandi, moi je suis juste devenu vieux.
