What can we expect from 2009, in the Swedish music scene? Well, there are some "new" artists/bands who might explode this year. Here is one of them... Jonathan Johansson.
The first time I mentionned Jonathan Johansson and his song En hand i himlen in Absolut Noise, we were in May 2008 and he was still unsigned. Now he works with the (great) label Hybris. I bet when his debut album will be out this year, he will gain quite a wide audience in Sweden. But that's not what actually matters to me. What is at stake here is the magnificience of his songs, especially En Hand I Himlen, one of my favourite track of 2008. A very "Swedish" one, full of melancholy. Even if I do not get the lyrics, it means something to me. I cannot explain this though.
As you will be able to see in this Q&A, Jonathan is an interesting character with a point of view about what he does and a strong personnality. An artist, then.
Tell me... who is Jonathan Johansson?
I am a 28 year old socialworker who knows how to write music, and does it.
Were you in other bands before to go solo? How many? How was it?
Only one, when I was a kid, seventeen, called Pale descent. A band influenced by Sisters of mercy and others. I played the guitar and wore a lot of make up.
What your Swedish lyrics usually deal with? What En hand I himlen is about?
That particular song is about being torn in two, not being able to decide which kind of life you want to live. I usually write about life under an existing God, with a big G. Which makes me a lunatic in Sweden, but I don't care : that's what I am dealing with. I believe in it. And there are consequences.
How about the En hand I himlen video? Do you pay attention to the visual part of your band as much as the music or do you think image has taken too much place in music?
I pay big attention to the visual part, it's very important, and I'm very fond of the video : it's warm, funny and brilliant in its simplicity. But on the other hand, there is always a risk to focus on the wrong things in music. Music has to come first, always, all the visual parts are there to expand the music, nothing else.
En Hand I Himlen is quite influenced by the 1980s. Which bands have influenced you?
Well, I've listen a lot to The Cure all my life, but not that much music from the 80s as one could believe. For me, it's all about the songs. A good song is always a good song, and the greatest song writer is and will always be Bob Dylan.
Which bands have you listened to this past week ? Any Swedish ones?
This past week? Bon Iver, and myself. I'm gonna master the album tomorrow, so I've been very focused on my own music those last days.
Your opinion about the current Swedish music scene ?
It's splendid. Studio, Nordpolen, Loney Dear, Johan Heltne, The Tough Alliance, Håkan Hellström, Markus Krunegård, Frida Hyvönen, and Jenny Wilson - All swedes and all great.
What were you doing before to answer those questions ?
I'm at my job, a shelter for homeless people. They are asleep now, so I'm taking it slow slow...

Que peut-on attendre de 2009 dans la scène musicale suédoise ? Et bien, certains "nouveaux" artistes/groupes pourraient véritablement exploser cette année. En voici un... Jonathan Johansson.
La première fois que j'ai parlé de Jonathan Johansson et d'En hand i himlen dans Absolut Noise, nous étions en mai 2008 et il n'était signé nulle part. Désormais il travaille avec l'excellent label Hybris. Je vous parie que lorsque son premier album sortira cette année, il deviendra une personnalité connue en Suède. Mais ce n'est pas véritablement ce qui compte. Ce qui m'importe ce sont ses chansons majestueuses, particulièrement En Hand I Himlen. Assurément l'un de mes morceaux préférés en 2008. Une chanson très "suédoise", empreinte d'une vraie mélancolie. Si je ne saisis pas les paroles, la musique me parle.
Comme vous le constaterez en lisant cette interview, Jonathan est un personnage digne d'intérêt, avec un vrai point de vue sur sa musique et une forte personnalité. En deux mots : un artiste.
Dis-moi... qui est Jonathan Johansson ?
Je suis un travailleur social de 28 ans qui sait comment écrire de la musique, et le fait.
Tu as fait partie d'un groupe avant de jouer en solo ? Dans combien de groupes? Comment c'était ?
Seulement un, quand j'étais gamin, à 17 ans : un groupe qui s'appelait Pale descent et était influencé, entres autres, par Sisters of mercy. Je jouais de la guitare et porté pas mal de maquillage.
De quoi parlent les paroles de tes chansons (Jonathan chante en suédois) ? De quoi traite En hand I himlen ?
Ce morceau évoque le fait d'être coupé en deux, de ne pas être capable de décider quelle vie tu souhaites mener. J'écris habituellement sur la vie qui se déroule sous le regard de Dieu, un Dieu avec un D majuscule. Cela me fait passer pour un fou en Suède, mais je m'en fiche : c'est ce qui m'intéresse, je crois en cela. Et cela implique certaines conséquences.
Parle moi un peu du clip d'En hand I himlen ? Tu fais gaffe à l'aspect visuel de ta musique ou penses-tu que les images ont pris une place trop importante par rapport au son ?
Je prête beaucoup d'attention à l'aspect visuel, c'est très important et j'aime beaucoup le clip : il est chaleureux, drôle et inspiré dans sa simplicité. Mais d'un autre côté, il risque de se concentrer uniquement sur les mauvais aspects de la musique est présent. La musique doit toujours primer. Toujours. L'aspect visuel doit apporter quelque chose à la musique, rien d'autre.
En Hand I Himlen est pas mal influencé par les années 1980. Quels groupes t'ont inspiré ?
Et bien, j'ai beaucoup écouté The Cure tout au long de ma vie, mais moins de groupes des années 80 qu'on pourrait le penser. Pour moi, tout tient dans les chansons. Une bonne chanson reste une bonne chanson, et le plus talentueux pour écrire des chansons est et restera Bob Dylan.
Quels groupes as tu écoutés cette semaine ? Des groupes suédois ?
Cette semaine ? Bon Iver, et moi-même. J'enregistre le master de mon album demain. J'ai donc été très concentré sur ma propre musique ces derniers jours.
Ton avis sur la scène musicale suédoise actuelle ?
Elle est splendide. Studio, Nordpolen, Loney Dear, Johan Heltne, The Tough Alliance, Håkan Hellström, Markus Krunegård, Frida Hyvönen et Jenny Wilson - tous Suédois et tous géniaux.
Qu'étais-tu en train de faire avant de répondre à ces questions ?
Je suis au boulot, un refuge pour les sans-abris. Ils dorment là, alors c'est assez calme pour moi...
