[grosse attente] Coraline (2009)

Il fut un jour béni où l’on me fit découvrir le travail de Dave McKean et de Neil Gaiman. A mon tour, je bénis ce jour car il m’a mené vers le livre pour enfants Coraline. Il racontait les tribulations de Coraline, une petite fille qui découvrait une porte sur un monde effrayant dans sa nouvelle maison, accompagnée d’un drôle de matou capable de parler. D’une écriture plutôt naïve, je ne retenais que le meilleur, en me disant qu’il serait merveilleux de voir une adaptation faite par Geiman lui-même. Quelques temps plus tard apparaissait une drôle de petite vidéo sur YouTube qui annonçait la sortie prochaine de Coraline au cinéma. Puis plus rien.

Et puis le nom légendaire d’Henry Selick est venu se greffer au projet… Henry Selick, son Mister Jack, sa pêche géante, ses animations de The Life Aquatic… Franchement, ça commençait à devenir sérieusement tentant.
Selick parle du projet ici. Il raconte :

“I actually kind of had to get away from Neil for a while in order to turn it into a movie, because it’s a great, wonderful book [...] I was following it too closely, and it was hard to make the transition with sharing everything I was doing with Neil. I mean, he’s very, incredibly talented, and it’s intimidating. He’s such a fine writer. But the funny thing is, I said, ‘I can’t talk to you for a year.’ And when I came back, I had changed things and invented another character, expanded things, shrunk [things]. But everywhere I could I kept what I could from the book and respected the tone [...] (Neil Gaiman) was very happy [...] So we came to that place where we understood a movie’s not a book. And then, along the way, I showed him character designs. I’ve shown him story reels of the film. So it’s not like a regular, all-the-time interaction, but on a fairly regular basis I send him new stuff. And he’s always right. He always has one or two comments, and except in one case–the cat’s voice, which he doesn’t like … because he actually wanted to do it himself—but aside from that, every other note he’s given has been right and doable. … So he’s great, an amazing collaborator and not someone who’s pulling out their hair [going], ‘They’re ruining my books.‘”

Les voix des personnages principaux ne sont pas moins célèbres que leurs auteurs : Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane…
Quant au très attendu Coraline, il devrait sortir en février outre-atlantique, mais seulement le 15 Avril 2009 sur nos terres françaises.
