Le public de Martinique connaît l’artiste Ebony G. Patterson, originaire de la Jamaïque qui vit et travaille aujourd’hui aux Etats Unis.

La Fondation Clément a présenté ses oeuvres à deux reprises dans des expositions conçues par le commissaire Dominique Brebion, Vous êtes ici en 2010 et Visions archipéliques en 2016. Le blog de l’Aica Caraïbe du sud lui consacre régulièrement des articles.

Aujourd’hui, la galerie Monique Meloche est ravie d’annoncer une installation immersive de Ebony G. Patterson à l’Armory Show, dans la section FOCUS, organisée par Robyn Farrell. La pratique expansive de Patterson aborde la visibilité et l’invisibilité à travers des explorations de classe, de race, de genre, de faste et d’actes de violence dans le contexte des espaces postcoloniaux. Cette installation prolonge la première présentation publique de la série « Studies for a vocabulary of loss » d’Ebony Patterson au New York Botanical Garden l’été dernier.

Depuis 2013, l’idée du jardin, à la fois réel et imaginaire, forme un arc essentiel de la pratique de Patterson. En faisant du jardin un lieu de pouvoir, elle l’explore comme métaphore de l’espace postcolonial et extension du corps. Sa série en cours « Studies for a vocabulary of loss », qui a débuté en 2022, dominera l’ensemble du stand, enveloppant l’espace de 24 œuvres encadrées numérotées X – XXXIV. Chaque pièce est richement décorée et superposée, attirant les spectateurs vers nous et leur demandant à notre manière de nous engager dans l’acte de regarder. Notamment, chaque œuvre comprend un texte qui n’est pas associé aux couronnes funéraires, ce qui remet en question la notion de deuil et invite les spectateurs à s’immerger dans des juxtapositions inattendues et des résonances symboliques. Patterson déclare : « J’ai pour objectif d’élever ceux qui ont été jugés invisibles ou non visibles en raison de structures sociales coloniales héritées, en incorporant leurs mots comme tactique pour les commémorer. C’est une façon de dire : je suis ici, et vous ne pouvez pas me refuser. »
